Variant muscle to the little finger originating from the flexor digitorum superficialis

چکیده
Introduction Flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) is the muscle which responsible from the skill actions of the fingers. It has three heads including humeral, ulnar and radial; generally the humeral and ulnar heads are fused together and called as humeroulnar head. The muscle fibers reach the other fingers except the thumb. Each of the muscle beams divides into two parts at the level of the 1st phalanx, and they end at the lateral sides of the middle parts of the middle phalanx. It is innervated by the median nerve. In case of the function loss of this muscle, 2nd phalanx can not make flexion against force. Variations of the muscles of the anterior forearm are common [1,2,3,4,5,6]. The clinicians and the anatomist should know that the variations of FDS are more common than the other antebrachial muscles [7]. Clinical [1] and anatomical [8] studies have revealed variations of the portion of the FDS to the little finger (FDS -V) where the muscle belly is fused with that of the belly to the ring (fourth) finger or lacks a tendon. Even if most variations of FDS have been reported, some details might have been missed. Because of the importance of these anatomic details, we reported this case. Knowledge of such variations may be important during the hand surgery and in the preoperative diagnosis related to the muscles in the front side of the forearm and the tendons passing through the carpal tunnel.

An Anomaly of Flexor Muscles of the Fifth (Little) Finger of the Hand: An Anatomical Case Report
Various anomalies of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) muscles of the little finger have been reported in the literature. These include many variations of the FDS and FDP, such as absence of the little finger FDS tendon, aplasia of the FDP to the little finger, an accessory FDS to the little finger, doubling of the tendon, attachments to other superfi...
متن کاملAnomalous flexor digitorum superficialis muscle belly presenting as a mass within the palm.
Anomalies of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle are extremely uncommon and usually present as a painful mass or pseudotumour within the palm. Diagnosis may be difficult because many other soft tissue tumours (lipomas, ganglions, giant cell tumours and hamartomas) may present similarly. Magnetic resonance imaging helps to define the extent and characteristics of this anomalous muscle bell...
متن کاملBilateral Absence of Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (FDS) Tendon of the Little Finger: Clinical Significance.
The flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS/sublimis) is a flexor of the digits of the hand and has been reported to have varying degrees of agenesis. During routine cadaveric dissection for undergraduates at SRMS-IMS Bareilly, India, we observed bilateral absence of the FDS tendon to little finger in the upper limbs of a 45-year-old male cadaver. The muscle was normally supplied by a branch of med...
متن کاملAn unusual flexor of the little finger and ulnar nerve entrapment : a case report
Introduction The classic description of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle states that, it arises by two heads, humero-ulnar and radial heads respectively and divides into four muscle bundles in the distal third of the forearm. The muscle bundles then form four separate tendons above the wrist and get inserted to the sides of the shaft of the middle phalanx of the medial four digit...
متن کاملUnusual Closed Traumatic Avulsion of Both Flexor Tendons in Zones 1 and 3 of the Little Finger
Closed tendon avulsion of both flexor tendons in the same finger is an extremely rare condition. We encountered the case of a patient who presented a rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus in zone 1 and flexor digitorum superficialis in zone 3 in the little finger. This occurrence has not been reported previously. We hereby present our case, make a review of the literature of avulsion of bot...
